[News] Notch steps down as lead developer of Minecraft

As of yesterday, Jens Bergensten is the new lead developer on Minecraft. He will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess. I’ve promised him to not pull rank. ;)

We’ve been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I’m amazed at how much in synch we two are when it comes to how to design the game. And when we don’t agree, we discuss it and something much better comes out at a result. He’s truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him.

If you want to contact Jens, he’s on twitter as @jeb_, or you can email him at jeb@mojang.com

Personally, I will now rest for a while, then get back to work refreshed and eager. I’ll be helping out with Minecraft, of course, but also starting work on some new project.

This is an interesting turn of events, but not entirely surprising. The good news is Minecraft will continue to have support and Mojang as a whole will be working on new games for us to get addicted to… Wait does this make Jeb the god of Minecraftia now?

[News] Notch vs Yogscast [MineCon]

Woke up this morning to see the chaos going on about some events at MineCon. If you haven’t heard anything let me fill you in.

What was everyone’s first guess? Unfortunately it was the Yogscast. Yes their highlight reel had cursing in it from previously recorded videos, but surely Mojang knew of this. They typically do a screening at these kinds of things to make sure everything follows the guidelines, right?

WARNING: There might be a drop or two of the F-bomb ahead.

Minecraft Weekly: Minecon and More!

So today was the big day! Minecon is finally here! Minecraft fans all over the world have been eagerly waiting for today, and for the big release of Minecraft 1.0.
If you missed it live, check it here: MineCon Live

We got to meet the whole Mojang team, and see the faces behind the pixles. The biggest moment was when Notch himself walked out. The man that made the game millions of people fell in love with. He talked a bit about Mojang’s history and where they’re headed. But the moment everyone was waiting for was the official release of Minecraft 1.0. And that moment came with the flip of a switch.

[News] What we now know about Minecraft 1.8 [Minecraft Weekly 8.29.2011]

A lot of information was dropped at PAX Prime 2011 about the Adventure update of Minecraft. I’m going to give you as much information as I can. Unfortunately we were not at PAX this year, so I’ll be linking to some outside sources to get you all the details.

  • Two Parts – Notch himself mentioned that the update was so big it would probably have to be broken into a couple of updates (eg. 1.8 and 1.9). I’m actually happy about this bit of news because it allows for more time to fix the bugs that are likely to arise. It also most likely means we will be seeing part of the update sooner rather than later, which leads me to the next point.
  •

  • NPCs – No NPCs were shown at PAX because they weren’t finished yet. Mojang Reps mentioned they would be included in the update, but my guess (and hope) is that won’t be until 1.9. That way maybe we can get the update sooner. Today? Tomorrow? Probably not. Notch said, “within a couple of weeks.” We’ll be sure to let you know when it drops though because it means we will be starting a new map on the DigiSama server.
