Spike’s Adventures at Phoenix Comicon 2012

So I went to Phoenix Comicon 2012 this past Memorial Day weekend. Here’s a breakdown of what happened.

I made a mask using 30cm by 30cm laminated panels attached to a foam board box via Velcro. That way I can change my “skin” whenever I feel like it. It was a good prototype but I already have some better ideas for next time.

Minecraft mask panels.

Thumbs up for America.

I made it to Phoenix at some point on Friday afternoon. I don’t remember the exact time, but I know it was a couple hours later than I originally told my friend I’d be there. We rode the Lightrail to the convention center and man this place was busy.

We wandered the floor for a while looking at the people in costumes, the comic artists, and vendors selling all sorts of nerdy goodness.

[Update] Notch vs Yogscast: Episode Two

[click here for part 1: the f-bomb]

So. This is almost as exciting as it is cringe worthy. Still no update from the Yogscast, but seeing as how they aren’t even close to being home and Notch is on vacation, I doubt we will get any more details any time soon.

Now before I get into what Notch has said, let me point out a couple observations I have made. I understand people being upset. This battle is not pretty, nor fun, essentially it’s a game that’s been promoted by people like and including the Yogscast, yet without it they themselves wouldn’t have the same fan base they do now. The biggest point is though, the Yogscast have not had a chance to tell their side of the story. People are so ready to attack both Notch and/or the Yogscast and they have no idea whats going on other than what little Notch has actually said.

What was everyone’s first guess? Unfortunately it was the Yogscast. Yes their highlight reel had cursing in it from previously recorded videos, but surely Mojang knew of this. They typically do a screening at these kinds of things to make sure everything follows the guidelines, right?

WARNING: There might be a drop or two of the F-bomb ahead.

We got to meet the whole Mojang team, and see the faces behind the pixles. The biggest moment was when Notch himself walked out. The man that made the game millions of people fell in love with. He talked a bit about Mojang’s history and where they’re headed. But the moment everyone was waiting for was the official release of Minecraft 1.0. And that moment came with the flip of a switch.

Vidcon Recap

What a very entertaining experience we had at VidCon. While it was quite difficult on the way to the hotel, be it the 10 hour train ride, the death ridden cab driver, or the intense lines checking in, the conference was hands down the most intense thing I have ever experienced. We had the luxury of staying at the hotel of the convention so luckily everything was in hands reach if we ever wanted to do anything.

VidCon Day 1 Review

Vidcon Day 1 Roundup

After what seemed like an eternity on the train ride to Los Angeles, and a cab driver that seemed to want to kill Kyle and myself, we finally made it to the Hyatt Regency Plaza Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles for the amazing convention known as Vidcon.

The sightings of these “YouTube phenomenons” were very frequent and very fun to find- it was like playing a dulled down version of “Where’s Waldo” with Waldo circled on more than 90% of the pages. Our first “meet-up” was with Justine Ezarik (iJustine) and Michael Buckley (Whatthebuck) in a random hallway just talking to convention goers. After chatting it up a bit, we decided to go check out some of the booths and see what on Earth could go on at a convention based around YouTube.

Phoenix Comicon [Saturday 5.28.2011]

Here’s whats left from Friday that didn’t get posted. Here’s a warning, a ton of these pictures have the two guys I hung out with in them. I’m kinda wishing I got a lot more of the people by themselves, but hey there will be more cons yeah? Good news is they aren’t just random people. Josh and I might collaborate on a webcomic and we made his friend Noah take pictures with furries. I’ll stop typing and let you check everything out.
